Freeze Dryer
Eyela Model No: FDU – 1200 freeze dryer manufactured by Tokyo Rikakikai Co. Ltd, Japan is a bench top model used to preserve a variety of material in a suitable round bottom flask. The cooling temperature of this unit is – 45 deg C. It is also used to make the material more convenient for transport. Freeze drying, also known as lyophilization or cryodessication is a dehydration process. It works by freezing the material and then reducing the surrounding pressure to allow the frozen water in the material to sublimate directly from the solid phase to the gas phase. If a freeze-dried substance is sealed to prevent the reabsorption of moisture, the substance may be stored at room temperature without refrigeration and be protected against spoilage for many years. Preservation is possible because the greatly reduced water content inhibits the action of microorganisms and enzymes that would normally spoil or degrade the substance.Freeze drying is widely used for the storage of serum/plasma blood samples in hospitals for future diagnosis, transport and preservation. It is used in pharmaceutical companies for increasing the shelf-life of products such as vaccines and injectables. It is used in food industry to preserve food. It is also used in research laboratories to make products more stable after chemical synthesis. It makes the chemical samples easier to dissolve in water for subsequent use.
